José Manuel Cordeiro Pinho | Joe Pino
José was born José Manuel Cordeiro but was known by many names in Hawai’i: José Manuel Cordeiro, José Manuel Codeiro, José C. Pinho, Joseph Pinho & Joe Pino. At age 38 José Manuel Cordeiro and his family comprising of his wife Maria Isabel, sons António (10), João (7), Francisco (1), and daughters Maria (8) and Maria (4) left from their ancestral home in Lagoa in the Santa Cruz parish of the island of São Miguel in the Azores for the Sandwich Islands (Hawai’i) in 1883 aboard the British steamship, the S.S. Abergeldie. The Portuguese emigration records note that José Manuel is illiterate and is a field hand; his wife, Maria Isabel is not illiterate. After immigration, he took the last name of his maternal grandfather.
The 1900 Census of the Territory of Hawaii, taken 17 years after José and Maria’s immigration finds them with 4 additional children at Honoka’a Mill. Maria has had 9 children; the eldest two, António has already left home. Curiously, the census omits Victor – perhaps the census taker did not note the difference between him and Victorine. The family has already embraced their new home and have Anglicized their names: José is Joseph, João is John, Francisco is Frank, and the youngest Maria is Mary. All the children speak English. The eldest boys, John and Frank at 22 and 17 years of age respectively, are field hands like their father.
At 60, José is a plantation laborer meaning – unlike other Portuguese and individuals of European descent found in the census records – he has not worked his way up and is not an Overseer (or Luna, as the Portuguese were known). In eleven years, José Manuel is dead by 1911. He has become Joe Pino at this point and is buried in Honoka’a. The Archives of the Azores provide the following about José and his estranged brother:
