Tucked inside a 1944 Kings Point graduation flyer were a graduation ticket and several photographs. They were of an unknown cadet-midshipman, his friend and fellow cadet-midshipman Karl Buehler of Rochester, and a young woman called “Miss Brain.” On the back of the invitation is a note intimating the cadet’s sadness at his parents not being able to attend his graduation, but optimism in seeing them soon.
What is curious about the photographs is that they show the Kings Pointers wearing U.S. Navy Midshipman caps and a mix of U.S. Navy war theater and Merchant Marine war zone ribbons.
