The story of my father’s family is a large ball of tangled yarn – Antonio de Amaral was born in Portugal (perhaps Lisbon). Family lore asserts he was given a single gold coin and he was to travel to São Paulo, Brazil to live with an uncle. He supposedly jumped ship and continued on to California or perhaps Hawaii. Whatever the case may be, he settled in the Bay Area, met his wife Mary Muniz, and eventually migrated to Redlands, California.
Antonio, in the late-1800s was a common Portuguese surname, second only to Manoel. Thus, trying to pin-down Antonio’s whereabouts and any ancestry has been an essay in frustration.
