Close to a quarter-century ago, I lived in Portugal. From that time came a short story in an anthology of Portuguese diasporic writing, a smattering of essays, and a recipe submitted to and passed over by a culinary journal on plant-based pasteís de nata. Below, find chapters of a novel-in-progress based on my experiences in that twilight country; it has the working title Ultramar and remains unpublished.
